D ec 1 99 8 Evolutionary Baldwin Effect in AGN

چکیده

Assuming Active Galactic Nuclei are powered by accretion onto a massive black hole we suggest that the growth of the central black hole mass due to the matter accreted over the AGN lifetime causes evolution of the luminosity and spectrum. We show that the effective temperature of the UV continuum spectrum is likely to be anti-correlated with the black hole mass and with the luminosity. We estimate the change in the equivalent width of the emission lines due to the growth of the black hole and show that for plausible evolutionary tracks and effective temperature models the equivalent width is anti-correlated with continuum luminosity thus implying an evolutionary origin to the Baldwin effect.

The structure of AGN accretion disks on sub-parsec scales can be probed through free-free absorption of synchrotron emission from the base of symmetric radio jets. For objects in which both jet and counterjet are detectable with VLBI, the accretion disk will cover part of the counterjet and produce diminished brightness whose angular size and depth as a function of frequency can reveal the radi...

Understanding the inverse equivalent width – luminosity relationship (Baldwin Effect), the topic of this meeting, requires extracting information on continuum and emission line parameters from samples of AGN. We wish to discover whether, and how, different subsets of measured parameters may correlate with each other. This general problem is the domain of Principal Components Analysis (PCA). We ...

Discovery of a strong Baldwin effect in mid-infrared AGN lines

We present the discovery of a Baldwin effect in 8 nearby Seyfert galaxies for the three most prominent mid-infrared forbidden emission lines observable from the ground that are commonly found in AGN, [Ar iii](λ8.99 μm), [S iv](λ10.51 μm), and [Ne ii](λ12.81 μm). The observations were carried out using the VLT/VISIR imager and spectroraph at the ESO/Paranal observatory. The bulk of the observed ...

Baldwin effect for the narrow Fe K α lines observed in Active Galactic Nuclei

The majority of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) observed by XMM-Newton reveal narrow Fe Kα lines at ∼ 6.4 keV, due to emission from cold (neutral) material. There is an X-ray Baldwin effect in Type I AGN, in that the equivalent width of the line decreases with increasing luminosity, with weighted linear regression giving EW ∝ L −0.17 ± 0.08 (Spearman Rank probability of > 99.9 per cent). With curr...
